Father all-powerful, your gifts of love are countless and your goodness infinite. On Thanksgiving Day we come before you with gratitude for your kindness: open our hearts to concern for our fellow men and women, so that we may share your gifts in our loving service. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. (Opening prayer on Thanksgiving Day taken from www.dailygospel.org)
From today’s gospel (Matthew 25: 31-46):
“For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
A stranger and you welcomed me,
Naked and you clothed me,
Ill and you cared for me,
In prison and you visited me.
‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least brothers of mine, you did for me.’”
How well are we serving Christ ,our King, as He is present in the ‘least’ among us?
We must first open our eyes and hearts to recognize those in need, and then reach out to them with the compassion of Christ.
Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent. Let us use this season wisely to prepare our hearts for the birth of Our Savior. Let us make a commitment to do something each day to make ready the way of the Lord!
